Belantara and L'Occitane: Two Different Origins in Body Care

L'Occitane en Provence has built one of the most recognised body care brands in the world around a single idea: bring the ingredients of the south of France — shea butter chief among them — into a global range of shops and products, from Provence outward to more than ninety countries. It has been doing this since 1976, and it has done it at a scale few brands ever reach.

Belantara starts from the same instinct, in a different place. Where L'Occitane's hero ingredient is shea butter and its origin is Provence, Belantara's is mango butter, pressed from the discarded seed of the fruit, and its origin is Southeast Asia — the tropical belt Singapore sits inside. Two brands, two regions, two answers to the same underlying question: what does the place you are from have to offer the way you care for your skin.

Discover Belantara

Scale is one obvious difference. L'Occitane operates more than three thousand stores worldwide, inside a large and established beauty group. Belantara is a small, considered collection, made with care in Singapore by two people who wanted a body care range that spoke to where they actually live. Neither model is the right one for every shopper. The question worth asking is which story the ingredient in the bottle actually belongs to.

Shea butter and mango butter are both plant-pressed butters used to soften and protect skin, and both brands treat their hero ingredient as the anchor of the entire range. The difference is provenance: shea butter is native to the savannahs of West and Central Africa, sourced by L'Occitane for a French-formulated range; mango butter is native to the same tropical belt Belantara is made in, pressed from the discarded seed of a fruit that grows across Southeast Asia. For a shopper in Singapore or Hong Kong, one of these ingredients is a story about somewhere else. The other is a story about home.

Three Ways to Compare

A closer look at where the two brands genuinely differ.

Origin

L'Occitane draws its identity from Provence, in the south of France. Belantara draws its from Southeast Asia, and specifically from Singapore, where every product is made with care.

Shea butter, for L'Occitane, sourced from West and Central Africa. Mango butter, for Belantara, pressed from the discarded seed of a fruit grown across the region the brand calls home.

Choosing between the two is not really a question of which is better made. Both brands have reasons behind their formulas, and both have loyal customers. It is a question of which origin story the person applying the product actually wants on their skin — the south of France, or the tropical forests of Southeast Asia.

A DIFFERENT REGION, A DIFFERENT FORMULA

Belantara was never trying to be a Singapore version of a French brand. It began with a simpler question: what does Southeast Asia have to offer the way people care for their skin. Made with care in Singapore.

The Three Fragrances, Built Around Mango Butter

Mango butter is the base. The fragrance is the voice.

Ylang Ylang & Pear. Warm, floral, slowly sweet. The richness of ylang ylang — drawn from the forests of the Far East — softened by the quiet sweetness of pear. The first fragrance to reach for when the skin wants to be held.

Frangipani & Ambergris. Heavier. Warmer. The forests of Bali during a tropical storm, held in a bottle. Frangipani blooms at dusk; ambergris grounds it. For the evening, and everything that follows.

Lemongrass & Pandan. Green, grounded, quietly sweet. The scent of home across Southeast Asia — rain on warm earth, rice wrapped in leaf, the quiet green of a morning that has just begun.
